THE WEB DESIGN PROCESS:
Step I - Define Project Objectives
This critical stage defines
the fundamental goals
that the site wishes to accomplish. Here are
a list
of general questions we ask clients at this
stage:
What are the long-term objectives
of the
company/store?
Is this a commerce site?
Who is the audience?
How will people see the web address? How
will you market the site?
What is the overall budget?
Step 2 - Evaluate Content
Sometimes, the content that
is to be incorporated
in the site, whether text, pictures, audio or
video,
already exists. Other times, content needs to
be
newly generated. In all cases, the media needs
to
be reconstructed to live within an interactive
context.
What is the overall message
that wants to be
conveyed?
What information, media needs incorporated
in the site?
What existing media can be used in the site?
Does the content conform well to the
audience defined in phase I?
Step 3 - Information Design
The goal of the architecture
and navigation of any
site is two-fold: 1) to make a navigational
system
as intuitive as possible, and 2) to determine
what
features there will be and how it works. It's
like
designing an elegant machine, examining every
nut and bolt and making sure it will run smoothly,
invisibly to the user. At the end of this step
a
completed flow-chart will guide the construction
of
the rest of the site.
What navigational hierarchy
will best
accentuate the services/products offered in
the site?
Should there be an entrance tunnel?
What and how many sections should there
be? How deep?
Step 4 - Art Direction
The design of a site is critical
to its success. It
reflects the corporate identity/image of the
company/store, reinforces the brand and sets
a
mood. We also believe that there exists a place
beyond "Yes, I like it". We always
aim for "This is
amazing!" and will not settle for less.
We think that
this unique goal of ours really makes us stand
out
from our competitors. Our sites are gorgeous.
Does the logo/brand already
exist?
What are five adjectives that best describe
the image you want to project?
What is the palette of colors for any existing
materials (if any?)
Step 5 - Integration / Programming
From evaluating content to
integration, the
Technical Director plays an active role making
sure the objectives set forth are achievable
technically. After we have received final sign-off
from the client for the art and navigational
system,
we begin the process of preparing all the art
and
integrating it with the code that the programmer
will
write for each project. At the end, we have
a
completed website
